Undeserving Recipients of Grace

Posted: September 3, 2009 in Sin

It would be a good reminder, to me and others, that in our greatest acts of goodness we are still undeserving recipients of grace. Even in our greatest obedience and in our best expression of love, we fall short of God’s glorious perfection (Rom. 3:23, Is. 64:6). How much pride, complaining, impatience, and bitterness would be uprooted if the heart grasped how undeserving we are of the gospel? And not only are we undeserving, but actually ill-deserving. We truly deserve punishment and condemnation for our sins and failures. When our hearts are in this condition, we can truly experience the wondrous grace that is only found in Christ.

Oh how sweet to dwell on this fact: Romans 8:1,2 – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.”

Grace – “God giving us what we don’t deserve” (LIFE)
Mercy – God not giving us what we do deserve” (death)
